“I wanna be the very best…”

Admit it, you started humming the the tune and even finished the rest of the verse. Now that you’ve got that earworm, it’s time to celebrate an upcoming date, February 27th, known as National Pokemon Day.

It was on this date in Japan that Pokemon Red and Green were released for Nintendo’s Game Boy.  Two years later, Pokemon Red and Blue were released in North America. Since then, the Pokemon franchise has exploded into many different media outlets: manga, anime, Saturday morning cartoons, movies, and social media. Pokemon is what defined a generation of players and people who could recite all the names and their evolution, which gym leader was the best or worst (or a husbando or waifu), why they admire Team Rocket blasting off again, and how come Ash never seemed to age.

This week, we’ll be playing tracks from the top 5 best-selling Pokemon games in the franchise, by units sold, along with their covers and remixes. Listen in and enjoy the nostalgia; perhaps then you’ll remember the rest of the lyrics to the theme.
